Typhoon - “Merry Xmas Anyways”
You guys.
I love Christmas music. I love it all. Christmas music is such a different categorization than other types of music. It’s united by topic, rather than musical style. It’s the only way Mariah Carey and WAVVES can coexist in perfect harmony in my iTunes playlists.
There is a special type of Christmas music that I am fairly well-versed in.
DEPRESSING Christmas music.
I think that the most popular depressing Christmas song is certainly “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” because, sniff, who wants to be alone on Christmas, away from their family? No one!
One of Sufjan’s versions of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” is especially depressing and my friends and I used to sit listen to it and talk about how depressing it was. And then listen to it some more. And then listen to more of the ridiculous Christmas music I’ve amassed over the years.
My favorite depressing Christmas song is “Last Christmas” by Wham!. My fondest memory of this song is singing it with my dear friend Eliza and two-fingered homestay grandma on a tricked-out karaoke system in a four-story house/mansion tucked in the very back of an alley in Hanoi in March.
I found this new Christmas song that might be one of the most depressing things I’ve ever heard. I was listening to it on the way back to Bang Mot today and as soon as it was over, I had to put on “Step Into Christmas” by Elton John to cheer myself up.
